Join us for our inaugural #FishFreeFebruary campaign as we protest the global fish trade!
Right now, 75% of fisheries are fully exploited, over-exploited, or in collapse. Worse yet, we could see mostly fishless oceans as early as 2048 if global consumption of fish continues to rise. Unfortunately, global consumption of fish is projected to rise from 90 million tons today to 120 million tons by 2050; there is simply no sustainable way to produce this volume of fish. Even if dredging this volume of fish out of the ocean were somehow sustainable, it would still be profoundly unethical; fish are every bit as sentient as cats and dogs, and many spend their final hours in ice baths being slowly suffocated, feeling their organs rupture from the force of decompression, or, worse yet, suffering being hacked apart while still alive and fully conscious.
Join us as we not only protest this profound cruelty, but also the plundering and destruction of our oceans!
PLAN OF ACTION:
We will meet at the intersection of S. Brentwood Blvd. and Rose Avenue, which constitutes the main entrance to the Brentwood Square Shopping Mall. Similar to our Thanksgiving Cruelty demonstration, we will occupy all four corners of the intersection to ensure passersby can see us and our message, no matter which direction they are traveling. The last time we attempted this four corners strategy, we reached an estimated 2,700 people in the span of two hours. Even if only half those people read one of our signs, we still reached over 1,000 people with our message of compassion. This #FishFreeFebruary, help us spread compassion for all species, including our aquatic brothers, sisters, and xesters!
