Vegan USA reaches 1,000 members in record time.
On May 4th, we launched our latest group, Vegan USA, to unite vegans across the country. This group has since amassed 1,000 members, becoming our first group to reach this milestone in under three months. We are working to grow this community, which has already proven to be a valuable forum for the exchange vegan news in the US and beyond, and we hope to accrue 10,000 members by the end of 2025.
A record number of people express interest in our Vegan Climate Summit.
With 1.8k people marked “going” and over 11.2k people marked “interested,” our Vegan Climate Summit has generated an unprecedented level of interest. We are extremely grateful for the incredible support vegans across the country and around the world have shown us through this one event alone, and we look forward to leveraging this support for our upcoming Worldwide Vegan Climate March, a global day of action for a sustainable, plant-based future.
FreedomFest will return to St. Louis in 2024!
Given the success of our inaugural FreedomFest last month, we are delighted to officially announce FreedomFest 2023! This event will return to historic Tower Grove Park for the second year in a row, and we could hardly be more excited to make FreedomFest 2023 even larger and more impactful than the first time around. We hope this first-of-its-kind, vegan-themed social justice festival will not only reach thousands more St. Louisans, but also help catalyze a movement for more inclusive VegFests across the country and around the world. Get ready for our largest, most impactful event yet!

Today, we recognize Juneteenth.
This #Juneteenth, we would like to express our solidarity with the struggle for reparations to BIPOC people as a matter of both principle and practice. Reparations are a social justice imperative necessary to address the bloody, ongoing legacy of slavery, colonialism, and imperialist warmongering. After centuries of colonial violence, White people and the businesses, governments, and other institutions they control owe BIPOC just restitution for the crimes committed against them by our White supremacist society. We must not stop fighting until full and complete reparations are made for the countless, continuing crimes perpetrated against BIPOC.
We overhauled our city-specific Facebook pages and groups
We are pleased to announce that we have finished overhauling our city-specific Facebook pages and groups. We have optimized pages like Project Animal Freedom - Springfield, IL and groups like Lincoln, NE Vegetarians and Vegans for continued rapid growth. These groups and pages are key to our community-building strategy, which has the power to build community from scratch. Lincoln, NE, for example, lacked not only a local animal rights organization, but so much as a single veg-related Facebook group. In the span of nine months, we have grown their community to nearly 600 members, demonstrating the power of community-building strategy, even in areas that lack pre-existing infrastructure.
Today, we recognize the profound environmental impacts of animal agriculture
Animal agriculture is arguably the single most environmentally destructive industry on Earth. Not only is animal agriculture responsible for more greenhouse gas pollution than the entire global transportation sector, but a growing number of researchers believe animal agriculture’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions to be in the range of 31-51%, not 18% as commonly cited. Environmental specialists with the International Finance Corporation, Jeff Anhang and Robert Goodland, for example, have calculated that animal agriculture is “conservatively” responsible for 51% of all greenhouse gas emissions once you account for farmed animal respiration and other underestimated, overlooked, and miscounted data.
Happy April Fool’s Day!
Our team at Project Animal Freedom would like to not only wish you a happy April Fool’s Day, but also invite you to join Vegan Meme Factory, our official group for vegan memes. Now 500 members strong, this group will help keep the vegan laughs rolling year-round!
Lincoln, NE Vegetarians and Vegans reaches 500 members!
Prior to our efforts, Lincoln not only lacked a local animal rights organization, but so much as a single veg-related Facebook group. Our lead organizer for our Lincoln chapter, Alex Gewecke, has since built his community to well over 500 members in just nine months, demonstrating the power of our unique movement-building strategy in building community from scratch. Lincoln, NE Vegetarians and Vegans has now earned the distinction of being our first city-specific Facebook group outside of St. Louis to reach 500 members. Congratulations, Lincoln!
Our Vegan Climate Summit reaches 1,000 RSVPs!
On March 22nd, exactly one month before our second annual Vegan Climate Summit, we reached a major milestone for the first time in our organization’s history. Namely, we have surpassed 1,000 RSVPs to one of our events! While we have organized roughly two dozen events with over 100 RSVPs, our Vegan Climate Summit has consistently defied expectations, with over 1,000 people marked “going” and another 7.9k people marked “interested.” The amount of momentum we have generated around this and other events is a source of pride and a testament to our ability to build a movement that extends far beyond our headquarters here in St. Louis.
Garden of Vegan reaches 2,000 members!
At Project Animal Freedom, we pride ourselves on building community both on- and offline. That is why we are proud to announce that Garden of Vegan has become our second branded community to reach over 2,000 members. Since rebranding St. Louis Vegan Gardening as Garden of Vegan, this group has experienced unusually high engagement, bringing together aspiring gardeners, expert horticulturists, and people who just love plants and animals alike into a common forum. Our goal is to promote sustainable, veganic permaculture through this community, and we seem to be succeeding, one post at a time!
Seven chapters and counting!
After a year of rapid growth, we have finally reached seven chapters total across the Midwest. We now have a chapter in each of the following cities:
Columbia, MO
Joplin, MO
Lincoln, NE
Springfield, IL
Springfield, MO
St. Louis, MO
Topeka, KS
We would like to thank all our supporters who have made this milestone possible. We could not have made this far without you!
Today, we recognize International Women’s Day
This International Women’s Day, we would like to recognize all the mothers treated like machines by the animal abuse industry, as well as express our solidarity with the struggle for women’s rights worldwide. As authors like Carol J. Adams have forcefully demonstrated, the oppression of women is interwoven with the oppression of animals, and we cannot hope to achieve liberation for these two groups without addressing the oppression of each in tandem.
50 cities. 10 countries.
We are proud to announce that our Worldwide Vegan Climate March is slated to take place in over 50 cities across 10 countries. This milestone marks a momentous occasion for us. While a year ago we celebrated having at least one person on our mailing list in 46 US states and just over 50 countries, we are now effectively leveraging our network and mobilizing activists at an international scale, a sign of even greater things to come!
Our #FurFreeSTL petition reaches 1,000 signatures!
On February 1st, we launched our #FurFreeSTL petition on Change.org. Three weeks later, and we have already reached 1,000 signatures! We would like to thank all the people who have signed and shared this petition. Together, we can build the pressure necessary to convince the city of St. Louis to divest from the horrendously cruel fur industry.
Today, we launched our second annual #FishFreeFebruary campaign
Fish are sentient beings who exhibit a wide range of emotions, including stress, fear, playfulness, joy, and curiosity. Yet roughly 1-3 trillion of these highly sensitive beings are slaughtered by the fishing industry each year. This #FishFreeFebruary, please raise awareness about the rich emotional lives of fish by reminding friends that no matter how cold, slimy, or distant fish seem, we all suffer as equals.
Yesterday, we relaunched our #FurFreeSTL petition!
We have decided to migrate the petition we are using from our database to Change.org, the largest petition site in the world! Better yet, over 200 people have already signed our new petition, demonstrating the strong grassroots support for banning this horrendously cruel industry.
