Last weekend, we marched to close all slaughterhouses.
On Sunday, September 27th, we held our second annual March to Close All Slaughterhouses as a part of an international effort to ban all slaughterhouses once and for all. With 21 people joining us, this was our most successful march yet.
It takes courage, conviction, and commitment to speak up for the oppressed, and we are so grateful 21 activists took the time to lend their voices to the noble cause for nonhuman and human animal liberation. A special thanks to our three speakers, KC Mackey, Mwalimu Kwame Touré, and Mack Ara Freeman, and much appreciation to Willie Swartz, a first-time activist who joined us. We would also like to recognize Alexandra Boldwyn, Tavon Brooks, Jw Miller, and Lisa Jewel Donahue for assuming special roles during our march, from distributing leaflets to carrying our banner.
As impressive as our action was, I saw five slaughter trucks on my way home to Eureka; one was even stuffed with turkeys, destined to become either deli meat or the centerpieces on Thanksgiving tables across the country. Our work is far from over. But we will always remember 2020 as the year we first launched our #SlaughterFreeSeptember campaign.
Collaborating with Slaughter Free St. Louis and other Slaughter Free chapters, we will circulate a petition to ban slaughterhouses in and around St. Louis. Then we will work with city government to ban the last few slaughterhouses in the St. Louis region. Then we will win, building a fully slaughter-free St. Louis by 2025.
A massive, heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped fuel the movement that will one day deliver these stunning victories. As Margaret Mead so sagely implored, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
